Damn, Flash. What the hell, man? You sometimes get into that racist stuff, and I sort of ignore it because Jesus Christ, it's 2010. Outside of old Southern white men and LA gangsters does that shit really exist? I know that sounds like a naive question, and yes I've seen all the anti-Obama stuff from the right ..... but I guess I sort of figured that was just an easy thing to focus on for the haters.

It's not something I see in my daily life. Sure, I hear about it on the news, and I know it was an issue during the campaign. But I honestly don't think I know any true racists.

Sort of weird typing this, because I feel like a fool, but it's just never been a factor in my daily life.

I did have a couple of issues in my neighborhood back in Cincinnati when i was growing up, but even those seemed more financial-based than race-based. I guess I was in a weird boat because I really didn't see it in the music business growing up with my dad. He was mostly on the R&B side, but music was music and I always saw it as the great common denominator. I'm not talking about gang rap or heartland country -- I'm talking about *real* music.

I always heard my dad say it didn't matter if you were black, white, or blue -- what mattered was the sound.

God, this sounds so naive. More naive than I am, but I really believe it.

I know that hate still exists in this world, and I've experienced some of that. But in modern times (i.e. the era *we* grew up in), race was more of an easy target than having to intellectualize anything than a logical argument.

My point is -- there were some kids in the neighborhood when I was growing up, used to always give me hell about going to a white school and being light skinned or not black enough. They knew who my dad was and we always had music people around. It was funny, these thugs who gave me shit every other day of the week would come hangin' around like we were tight whenever someone came by the house. Like trying to get inside or be a part of it.

I'd have friends over all of the time. Just not these cats. Then the next day they'd be comin' at me like I thought I was too good for them, etc. Truth is, I wasn't exactly living in the hood. I wasn't in any kind of demographic than these guys were. But because they were assholes and couldn't get "inside" to meet the famous people or whatever, they found something to go after me with that made me different than them. I was "too light skinned" by their estimation.

That was no different than guys I played against in sports in high school. I went to a private school and was a DEFINITE minority by the color of my skin. So when I'm kicking their ass up and down the basketball court or on the football field, suddenly I become the "scholarship nigger."

I felt like I should have had my ACT scores tattooed on my head as if to say, "Nope, I'm smarter than you, too."

Or maybe roll around town in a Jag or something so I can say "And I have more money than you do as well."

Still, I never saw it as true racism.... just ignorant haters trying to find something to beat you on.

Pathetic.

And, you know, if they still had a problem after all of that, I could always beat their asses.
